Bunion Prevention Tips: How To Avoid Bunion Development

If you have a bunion that is causing you pain, Dr. Barry Shoenberg and Dr. Jeffrey Horowitz at Palisades Podiatry Associates in Tappan and Pomona, NY offer customized treatment to bring you relief.

Simple Tips for Preventing Bunion Development

Bunions are a very common issue that affects about one-third of adults at some point. They can be painful, but they can also be prevented. Dr. Shoenberg, Dr. Horowitz, and the team at Palisades Podiatry Associates of Tappan and Pomona, NY share some easy steps for bunion prevention below.

1. Choose Your Shoes Carefully

Bunions often form when you wear shoes that push your toe inward and rub against the outside of the toe. No matter how stylish a pair of shoes might be, they can cost you in the long run if:

  • You notice any rubbing or pinching when you put them on.
  • The toe box is tight and causes your toes to press against one another.
  • They have arch support that suits your arches. If they do not, custom orthotics can provide the necessary support.

It’s important to note that high heels can be especially detrimental to your foot health. If you’re going to wear them, do so sparingly and choose a low heel. Or consider avoiding them altogether.

2. Give Your Feet a Break

Every time you stand or walk, your feet are sustaining pressure. In addition to contributing to bunions, this can cause various other issues. Take some time each day to ditch your shoes and kick up your feet. They deserve a break from the pressure.

3. Keep Your Feet Strong

It might sound strange to exercise your feet, but they are made up of muscles and connective tissues that keep your bones in place and support your movement. Spend a few moments every day stretching and exercising your feet and toes.

4. Visit Your Podiatrist Regularly

Just like the rest of your body, your feet need a thorough check-up at least once a year. This allows your podiatrist to monitor any changes, implement treatment early, and provide preventative recommendations.

In between your annual visits, keep watch over your feet. Pay attention to any changes you notice as well as any pain or sensations you feel. If you notice anything different, schedule another visit to your podiatrist.
